Santa’s bag full of goodies

I always arrive somewhere (picking up one of our brood) with several minutes to spare and find myself with nothing to do. Before you quickly say, “You should pack a book! let me just say that with four children I truly count myself lucky to even make it out of the house on time at all, with all kids dressed, fed, and diapered. Packing something for myself, well that’s just borderline over-prepared and would completely blow my anti-establishment cover.
I had eight minutes before the bell rang as I sat in the car with Bub and Harpo. Holly G. had left a bag in the car of little trinkets from her dad’s house. She does this often. She is most noted for her ability to collect and gather things and find countless bags to put them in. There were hair ties, necklaces, and several pieces of carved, colored wood in her bag. I pulled the pieces of wood out, one by one.
The first was an christmas wreath colored red and green, with “Mom” scrawled on the back. The second was for R, a snowman with a pink hat and a blue scarf. The third was a candy cane, with plenty of green for Princess. It is her favorite color. Holly G. had even taken the time to write Princess’ name on the back in great detail, with a flower as the dot in the “i.” The fourth and fifth were for Holly’s brothers, their names scrawled on the backs as well.
I sat, staring at them, marveling at her thoughtfulness. Pride and love exuded from me. I asked her about her bag when I picked her up from school–my last stop on the way home every day. She pulled each delicate ornament out of her bag and said, “I made one for everyone in my family. I thought that these could be the first ornaments we hang this year, Mom…you know, the special ones.”
In a holiday season not rich with material things, I am completely in tune with the spirit of it. I see the Christmas spirit in every single one of my children’s eyes. My Christmas wish has already been granted…

What a beautiful post! And a beautiful sentiment. You’re a lucky Mom, I can tell. Leave it to kids to remind us what the “important” things are all about.
Thanks for joining us again this week for Pass the Torch Tuesday!

Thanks, Kelly. I have to admit, participating in this is really my gift. Every week I find myself looking at these moments differently, more poignantly. It has changed quite a bit of what might feel like tedium to true bliss.
And what a great group of gals participating in this! Some terrific writers (and Mommies) out there!
